Cica, Heartleaf, Mugwort: the Calming Ingredients K-Beauty Swears By

If you’ve browsed K-beauty long enough you’ve met the green trio: cica, heartleaf, mugwort. They appear on toners, pads, essences and masks — always with leafy packaging, always promising “calm”. Here’s what each one actually does, minus the marketing.

Heartleaf — the star of Korean calming care.
Heartleaf — the star of Korean calming care.

Cica (Centella Asiatica)

The original K-beauty rescue ingredient. Centella is rich in madecassoside, which supports the skin barrier and takes the heat out of irritation. Think of it as a fire blanket: post-sun, post-retinol, post-bad-decision skin. It’s the backbone of the TONYMOLY Quick Calming Pads — pre-soaked pads you swipe over a flushed T-zone.

Heartleaf (Houttuynia Cordata)

Korea’s breakout star of the last few years — literally. Heartleaf is lightly astringent and calming at once, which makes it ideal for oily, congestion-prone skin that’s also sensitive — the combination that makes most actives too harsh. If your skin gets angry in humidity, this is your leaf.

Mugwort (Artemisia)

The traditional one — used in Korean baths and teas for centuries. In skincare it’s an antioxidant-rich soother, warmer and richer in feel than cica. Best for dry, reactive skin that wants comfort, not clarification.

Which one is yours?
